Australia proposed to use facial recognition technology to enter online casinos

Australia’s Department of the Interior has proposed the use of facial recognition technology to allow Internet users access to adult content. Online casinos and pornography sites fall into this category.
Facial recognition is to be used to identify users in order to prevent minors from circumventing existing restrictions. If the proposal is approved, sites with content for adults will be obliged to use the verification of their clients by biometric data each time they log into their account. This would eliminate the admission of teenagers who can register at online casinos using their parents’ IDs.
For data verification, operators will be able to use the Face Verification Service database, which has been maintained in Australia since 2016. The same technology is proposed to be used by companies in the banking and telecommunications industries.
Australian citizens were skeptical of the government’s plans and criticized the proposal. In their opinion, it would be a direct invasion of privacy and could lead to mass surveillance.
